A lawyer for former prosecutor Orlando Figueira said on Wednesday that she had reviewed the request for an arrest warrant and confirmed his willingness to voluntarily appear in Evora, but understood that a suspensive appeal was pending.
“There is an appeal that is still pending in the Supreme Court (STJ) and I will consider it,” lawyer Carla Mariño told Lusa after the SIC said this afternoon that the arrest of the former prosecutor will take place next year . several hours, arrest warrants have now been issued.
Carla Mariño said she believes the appeal to STJ has a suspensive effect.
“If this is not the case, Dr Orlando Figueira will appear at Évora prison if it turns out that this appeal is not pending,” he said, adding that it “makes sense” for the former magistrate to voluntarily appear to serve his sentence of six years and the eight months in prison he was sentenced to in the 2018 Operation Fizz case because he had always said he was willing to serve his sentence.
“It will be so. There is no need to conduct it,” the lawyer said.
The “Operation Fizz” trial involves payments of more than 760 thousand euros from former Angolan vice-president Manuel Vicente and an offer of employment to Orlando Figueira as a legal adviser to Banco Privado Atlântico in Angola in exchange for archiving investigations involving the former Sonangol president and namely the acquisition of luxury real estate in the Estoril Sol building for 3.8 million euros.
