The German chancellor said that the country is doing what is necessary, but does not want an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine

Germany is doing what is “necessary” to support Ukraine by sanctioning the transfer of Leopard tanks to Kyiv, but wants to avoid a war between Russia and NATO, the German chancellor said Wednesday.

“We are doing what is necessary and possible to support Ukraine, but at the same time we want to avoid escalating the conflict towards war between Russia and NATO. [Organização do Tratado do Atlântico Norte]”, Olaf Scholz said in parliament after the announcement of permission to send German-made tanks to Kyiv.

Confirming that Germany would send 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks from the reserve of the federal army and train Ukrainian soldiers in the use of these vehicles, and also authorized the dispatch of other Leopard 2 tanks in service with the armies of the allied countries, the German Chancellor referred to the deputies who discussed the decision with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Germany will always respond when it comes to supporting Ukraine,” Scholz assured before a plenary session of parliament, stressing that the supply of tanks would be carried out “in agreement with the allies” and as part of a response to “imperialist aggression.” .” From Russia.

“Our decision involves sending the first company of tanks from our army, which correspond to the modern version of the Leopard,” he explained.

The Chancellor acknowledged that there was “no mathematical certainty” that the decision to send tanks to Ukraine would have the desired result, but considered it an “adequate option”, mainly because it was a plan “agreed with the US”. and France.”

Scholz added that the government made the decision after “intense negotiations” with the Allies because sending tanks is not something Germany can “do alone” and he took the opportunity to reassure the German population about the consequences. what can have for the security of the country.

“Trust me and the government,” he asked, insisting in his speech before the federal parliament (Bundestag) that the decision was not made due to pressure from events or partners.

Ukraine welcomed Germany’s decision to supply it with Leopard tanks and called on Western allies to continue sending heavy weapons to its forces to counter Russia.

“The first step has been taken. Ukraine needs a lot of Leopards,” Andriy Zermak, head of the cabinet of President Vladimir Zelensky, said on the Telegram social network, quoted by the Spanish agency EFE.
