Images of 4.2 million euro World Youth Day altar stage unveiled

altar scene in which Pope Francis will address World Youth Day (WYD) and which will cost the Lisbon Chamber 4.2 million euros, were revealed this Wednesday.

At a press conference in Tejo Park, where the event will take place in early August, where about 1.5 million people are expected, the Vice President of the Municipality of Filipe Anacoreta Correia presented a project for the altar stage, which will be nine meters high.

“It has nothing to do with another scene made in Portugal,” said the mayor, stressing that it is necessary to guarantee visibility from a long distance, taking into account the number of participants and remembering that the land in question is in a landfill.

The vice president of the municipality stated that the use of the altar stage “does not end at the event”, it is expected that its construction will return after World Youth Day (WYD) due to the interest of the organizers of the event.

“The chamber already has an interest in having the stage used for future events,” he said.

On Tuesday, Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas said he knew the altar stage would be very expensive to build, adding that it would be carried out to specifications given by the Catholic Church.

“We want this stage, this infrastructure to remain in the future, and many of these infrastructures remain in the future. I knew it would be very expensive, that it was a very big investment for the city,” Moedas said.

“No price comparison, any cost comparison is impossible to compare because we have never had something this size,” he said.

The stage altar will cost 18 times more than the structure built in 2010 for the visit of Benedict XVI to Lisbon.
