According to data from the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security presented this Friday to Lusa, the average remuneration declared by employees to the Social Security Service increased by 7.2% in 2023, to 1,463 euros.
According to the information, the declared average monthly remuneration for dependent work increased from 1365 euros in 2022 to 1463 euros in 2023, i.e. gross increase by 98 euros.
The update of the national minimum wage will contribute to an annual change, which in 2023 increased by €55 (7.8%) to €760 (currently the national minimum wage is €820).
The growth of average monthly wages announced in 2023 exceeded the target set in the agreement signed between the Government and some social partners on increasing incomes by 5.1% for 2023.
The increase was also higher than the 2023 average inflation of 4.3%, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The evolution of wages has contributed to the growth of Social Security revenues, especially contributions and deductions (contributions paid by employees and employers).
Revenue from fees and contributions increased in 2023 by 12.5% compared to the previous year, to €25,107.7 million, “as a result of an increase in average wages (by 7.2%) and an increase in employment (by 5% )”. , Luza emphasizes in response to the office of Labor Minister Ana Méndez Godinho.
The social security surplus last year was €5,464.4 million, €1,396.4 million more than in 2022, according to the budget performance report published this week by the Directorate General of Budget (DGO).
The surplus – the largest in recent years – was driven by a 7.8% increase in effective social security revenue to €38,311.4 million, compared with a 4.4% increase in expenditure to €32,847.0 million.
