In a brutal execution on public roads and in broad daylight that horrified a normally peaceful city of 20,000 residents, young Brazilian lawyer Brenda dos Santos Oliveira, 26, who was working on her first criminal case, and her client Janielson Nunez de 25 Lima was shot dead as she left the Santo Antonio police station in rural Rio Grande do Norte state in northeastern Brazil. Brenda and Janielson were riddled with bullets in her car about 500 meters from the police station where they had just left.
Four men on two motorcycles, their faces hidden by helmets and who had probably already followed Brenda’s car from the police station, surrounded the car and shot several times at the lawyer and her first client in the criminal court, both killed instantly. , without being able to provide them with any help. Three members of Janielson’s family, who were in the back seat of the car, escaped the hail of gunfire and were not injured when Brenda’s out-of-control car collided with the bus.
Brenda, who had opened a law firm with a classmate a little over a year ago and was a labor litigation specialist, decided to expand her scope of practice and went to the Santo Antonio police station to defend Janielson, who had been arrested hours earlier for the murder of a 19-year-old cowboy João Vitor Bento da Costa during a livestock festival two days earlier. Minutes before the murder, Brenda posted on her Instagram a photo taken at the police station with the caption “another person being charged based solely on what she told me,” alluding to the fact that Janielson only had complaints against him on social media, social issues, without any real evidence that he was the author of the cowboy’s death.
It was because of the lack of evidence or concrete testimony that the police chief (inspector) Thiago Batista overturned Janielson’s arrest and allowed him to leave the police station with Brenda, convinced by the young lawyer’s arguments that the charges against her client were weak. The two left, relieved and happy with what was her first success in the new area. They got into Brenda’s car with Janielson’s family, but were unable to get very far as they were surrounded and attacked by assassins on the same street.
