Publishing the sector’s results, the institute said that “following a year of decline marked by the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic”, 2021 saw “strong growth” in output (24.6%) and GVA (20.6%). ), exports (22.3%) and employment (11.4%), and above the national economic average (12.1%, 7.0%, 20.1% and 2.4% respectively) due to growth activities related to renewable energy.
In 2020, Portugal ranked 15th in terms of the GVA weight of the environmental goods and services sector in national GVA (2.8% and equal to the EU average), falling three positions compared to the previous year. The country retained its fifth place among the member countries with the highest share of exports in the national volume (4.4%).
