The PNP has arrested a 76-year-old man suspected of setting fire to a pasture in Arouca in Aveiro district, security forces said on Monday.
In a statement, the GNR clarified that the seventy-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for arson in the town of Albergaria da Serra.
The suspect may have used the fire to renew the pasture, a common practice among herders, a gardai source said.
“During an alarm about several fires, the military went to the scene where they were able to see a man who deliberately set a fire, and therefore they detained him at the scene of the crime,” the same message says.
Following the police actions, a report was sent to the Porto Judicial Police, which went to the scene of the incident to conduct additional investigative actions.
The man was due to attend his first arraignment in Feira’s court this Monday and what enforcement action was taken is currently unknown.
