According to the forecasts of the Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the cold that has been felt in Portugal in recent days will continue until next Saturday. At a time when energy prices have skyrocketed, the cold is getting harder to deal with. However, cold temperatures can take a toll on your health, so it’s important to take a number of steps to protect yourself.
The elderly and children are the most vulnerable to the effects of the cold, and it is important to pay more attention to these age groups as well. Hypothermia and frostbite are among the complications associated with prolonged exposure to low temperatures. Know what steps to take to mitigate the effects of the cold.
1- Keep your home temperature between 18°C and 21°C. In addition to a comfortable temperature, it minimizes sudden changes in temperature outside.
two- dress in layers instead of using one very thick one. Avoid wearing clothes that make you sweat and are too tight.
3- Use gloves, hats, warm socks and scarves.. It is very important to protect the limbs of the body, so these accessories are indispensable on very cold days.
four- Eat soups and drink hot drinks. It is a powerful ally to protect yourself from the cold.
five- During periods when the runny nose is delayed, you should make small movements with your fingers, arms and legs.. Thus, it avoids cooling the body.
6- Keep your skin hydratedespecially arms, legs, face and lips.
7- Take a bath with warm water. If you do this with very hot water, you will remove the natural protective layer of the skin.
8- Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages. Alcohol causes blood vessels to dilate, which speeds up heat loss and body cooling.
nine – Avoid outdoor sports. While you should be exercising your body, on very cold days you should protect yourself and hit the gym.
