The General Assembly to sum up the results of the regional legislative elections in the Azores, held on Sunday, begins on Tuesday at the Regional Directorate of Organization, Planning and Public Employment (DROPEP) in Angra do Heroísmo, on the island of Terceira.
The assembly includes the president of the Judicial Court of the Azores region, Pedro Albergaria, two lawyers, two mathematics teachers and nine randomly selected chairpersons of polling stations, the regional director for organization, planning and employment told Lusa.
According to Delio Borges, the work will analyze “the zero votes, the protocols of each polling station, a total of 291 polling stations, as well as any complaints that may have taken place on Sunday,” Delio Borges explained.
“Depending on the progress of this work, the meeting will end,” the regional director said.
According to the electoral operations calendar of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), the overall count “a protocol is immediately drawn up containing the results of the relevant operations, complaints, protests and counter-protests.”
This overall count “will be completed by the tenth day after the elections,” CNE indicates.
“The results of the general count are announced by the President [da Assembleia, o juiz presidente da Comarca] and then published by means of a notice posted on the door of the service building of the member of the regional government competent in electoral matters,” the CNE also states. In this case, it is located in the DROPEP room.
Within eight days of receiving the protocol of the general tabulation, the CNE prepares and publishes in Series 1 in the Official Gazette an official map of the election results.
The PSD/CDU/PPM coalition won regional elections in the Azores with 42.08% of the vote and 26 deputies, but was three votes short of an absolute majority, according to preliminary official results.
José Manuel Bolheiro, leader of the PSD/CDU-PP/PPM coalition that has governed the Azores since 2020, said he would govern the country with a “relative majority” for the next four years.
The PS is the second force in the archipelago with 23 mandates (35.91%), followed by Chega with five mandates (9.19%).
The Left Bloc party (2.54%), the Liberal Initiative (2.15%) and the People-Animals-Nature party (1.65%) each elected one regional deputy, adding to the 57 elected.
The representative of the Republic of the Azores, Pedro Catarino, plans to listen to the views of the political parties represented in the Legislative Assembly on February 19 and 20, after the official results of Sunday’s regional elections are published.
