In total there are already 43 thousand hectares of burnt territory. The city that suffered the most was Viña del Mar, where the fires are raging most intensely. The flames devastated entire neighborhoods and destroyed thousands of homes.
The fires will be driven by high temperatures, dry weather and strong winds. However, the governor of Valparaiso speaks of a criminal hand, since the fires in Viña del Mar started in inaccessible mountainous areas.
“All of Chile is suffering. But we will rise again,” promised PR man Gabriel Boric, who declared two days of national mourning and said it was the country’s worst tragedy since a 2010 earthquake that killed 525 people. The EU has already demonstrated its readiness to help fight the fires.
