WHO warns of worsening cholera incidence in eastern and southern Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday there was a “severe increase in cholera cases” in ten countries in eastern and southern Africa, including Mozambique, in January and warned of the risk of an epidemic.

The worst-affected countries are Zambia and Zimbabwe, while Mozambique, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Nigeria have active cholera outbreaks, with a total of 26,000 cases and 700 deaths, according to WHO.

“Climate change and conflicts add fuel to the fire. Floods, cyclones and droughts reduce access to clean water and create an ideal environment for cholera to flourish,” explained WHO Africa Regional Emergency Manager Fiona Braca during a teleconference from Brazzaville, the country’s capital. Republic of the Congo.
