People warn of new insurgency in Kisang

This Friday, residents of the Kisanga region warned of new movements of rebel groups that are terrorizing the Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique.

Despite the absence of any attacks, armed groups were seen on Monday at a primary school in the village of Mussomero, about six kilometers from the district headquarters of Quisanga, in the north of Cabo Delgado province.

“The terrorists arrived in our village around 18:00 (in Lisbon – 16:00), in very large numbers, most of them were armed, but they did not harm anyone,” a local resident from Quissanga’s headquarters told Lusa.

The movement of these groups, the source continued, caused some unrest, as a result of which some residents of this village decided to leave their homes.

“When they [os rebeldes] They noticed some residents were running away and asked no one to run, saying they were there to protect communities and inviting the public to join them,” he added.

Another resident of Kisanga district said the insurgents left the area around midnight but there were no clashes with the Defense and Security Forces stationed at the district headquarters.

“No one, fortunately, died. They say that they are on the side of the people and have again declared war on our military. They say that the military is persecuting them for no reason. I don’t believe it,” said another village resident. Kisanga.

Cabo Delgado province has faced an armed insurgency for six years, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State extremist group, leading to a military response from July 2021 backed by Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). liberation of areas near gas projects.

After a period of relative stability, new attacks and movements have been recorded in Cabo Delgado in recent weeks, although local authorities suspect the movement is linked to a crackdown carried out by defense and security forces in the districts of Macomia, Quisanga and Muidumbe among the hardest hit.

The conflict has already displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and nearly 4,000 people have died, according to the ACLED Conflict Recording Project.
