The love for the samba school in her heart and the desire to perform in a parade in front of her eight-year-old son, who was looking forward to this moment, made Marcelli de Abreu, queen and influential person of the Escola de Samba União Imperial, in the City of Santos, located on the coast of São Paulo, will endure the unimaginable victim of marching with a nail stuck in his back. She endured the pain and went to school until the end, so as not to lose points if she removed the part of the costume where the nail was.
Speaking to the Grupo Globo news site after the parade, Marcelli said that the pain she felt was very intense and that she felt blood flowing through her body, but she did not want to disappoint the school or, especially, her son. , who had been encouraging her to participate in parades for months. She said her vision became blurred during the parade and she had difficulty breathing due to a nail embedded in her back.
Her costume, which weighs 18 kilograms, had a support on the back that disappeared while traveling to and from the remote Amazon city of Parintins to be painted by famous artists. In desperation to solve the problem, since support was needed, the support was improvised from equipment found randomly in the sambadrome and probably abandoned by someone who was already using it.
But in this support there was a nail sticking out, which, as soon as Marcelli began the samba, pierced his back.
Unable to leave the parade, Marcelli endured the pain and managed to reach the end, from time to time asking others to discreetly pull down her heavy suit so that the nail could come out and she could breathe without pain, but these were fleeting moments. and as soon as the fantasy returned to the right place, the nail pierced her body again. In an interview, Marcelli said that both of his hands are still dormant and that he has difficulty opening and closing his hands, but he does not regret the sacrifice he made for the samba school and his son.
