Footballer Quincy Promes sentenced in absentia to six years in prison for drug trafficking

Footballer Quincy Promes from Spartak Moscow was sentenced in absentia by a Dutch court this Wednesday to six years in prison for his involvement in trafficking more than 1,350 kilograms of cocaine.

Dutch prosecutors have requested a nine-year sentence for the former Ajax player, 32, who is currently in Russia, where he has been playing for Spartak Moscow since 2021.

Quincy Promes, who also represented Sevilla in the 2018/19 season, did not participate in the trial because, according to his lawyers, he prioritized his “job duties” at the expense of the criminal investigation.

Due to his lack of cooperation with the justice system, the police were never able to question him on the facts of which he is accused, and the court convicted him in absentia and on the basis of evidence collected by investigators.

Quincy Promes’ defense team has always denied the Dutch striker’s involvement in drug trafficking.

Prosecutors accuse Promes and another suspect, also jailed for six years, of “importing, exporting, transporting and possessing 1,362.9 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a shipment of sea salt from Brazil” and transporting it to the port of Antwerp. .

Last year, a Dutch court also sentenced Promes to 18 months in prison for stabbing and “causing serious bodily harm” to his cousin’s knee during a family party in July 2020.

Ajax, the team the Dutchman was playing for when he was arrested in 2020, sold him two months later to Spartak Moscow for €8.5 million plus variables, almost half of the €15.7 million he paid “Seville”.
