The team of Russian opponent Alexei Navalny, who died in prison on Friday under unclear circumstances, said this Monday that investigators will examine his body for at least 14 days before handing it over to his family.
“Investigators have told Alexei’s lawyers and mother that they will not return his body, which will undergo a so-called ‘chemical examination’ for 14 days,” Kira Yarmich, a spokeswoman for the Russian opposition on Channel X, wrote.
Russian opponent Alexei Navalny, one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main opponents, has died aged 47 in an Arctic prison where he was serving a 19-year sentence.
Russian penitentiary services reported that Navalny felt unwell after a walk and lost consciousness.
Prominent Western leaders, his opponent’s family and supporters have blamed Putin for his death, a charge the Kremlin has rejected.
