US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield justified the veto by saying that negotiations were ongoing between the US, Egypt, Israel and Qatar to this end and to ensure the release of the hostages. “This resolution will have a negative impact on these negotiations. It would be irresponsible,” he assured.
A completely different position is taken by China, which at the end of the meeting thus expressed the general opinion of the other members of the Security Council: “With its veto, the United States has made the situation in the Gaza Strip even more dangerous. The parties involved, including China, expressed their strong disappointment and dissatisfaction.”
The US says it has a ceasefire proposal ready but will only move forward “as soon as possible”.
