Two fans of the Spanish team Real Sociedad were arrested and 13 others identified during the Erzaintza (autonomous police force of the Basque Country) investigation, launched after serious clashes occurred between the club’s fans and Benfica fans during the game. which pitted the two teams against each other in the Champions League on November 8 last year.
The detainees, aged 21 and 40, are charged with breach of public order, rioting and causing bodily harm during the riots that occurred near the Anoeta stadium in San Sebastian, where the two teams were meeting.
The arrests took place on Wednesday in the interior of the Basque Country and the suspects were taken to San Sebastian, where they will appear before an investigating judge. The Erzaintza investigation also led to the identification of 13 additional defendants for the same crimes.
Let us remind you that Benfica fans were arrested in San Sebastian before and during the meeting with Real Sociedad. In addition to clashes with members of Bulzada, the Basque club’s main fan base, red fans lit pyrotechnics during the game that reached areas of the stands where families with children were present.
