Bobi loses title of world’s oldest dog

Bobi, the Alentejo mongrel who was once recognized as the oldest dog in the world, has lost this title, as announced this Thursday by Guinness.

According to Guinness World Records, the review concluded that there was no further evidence to support the claim that Bauby is the world record holder.

In Bobi’s case, “the microchip data was taken from the Portuguese government database SIAC, which apparently did not require proof of age for dogs born before 2008 at the time of microchipping in 2022.”

He adds that due to “an additional veterinary report provided as evidence of Bobi’s age, which also provided microchip data,” they were left without conclusive evidence to conclusively confirm Bobi’s date of birth.

“We take great pride in guaranteeing the accuracy and integrity of all registration documents to the best of our ability.” However, “following concerns raised by veterinarians and other experts both privately and in public comments, as well as the findings of investigations by some media outlets, we felt it was important to begin reviewing Bobi’s medical history,” he said. Mark McKinley, Director of Records, Guinness World Records.

He also said proof is required for “all Guinness World Records titles.”
