Manuel Lourenco Gomes was released this Friday after spending nearly eight months in a Braganza prison for possession of a drug that turned out to be sugar.

A 48-year-old man was detained by the GNR in Torre de Moncorvo on May 31 last year for alleged possession of 32.637 grams of a drug wrapped in aluminum foil that was in the glove compartment of a car.
From the moment of his arrest, Manuel explained that he was a diabetic and that the product was not a drug, but a sugar saved in case of emergency. The guards did not believe this version and a quick test at the pharmacy concluded that it was cocaine.
It was in November that the detainee was finally able to prove the veracity of his story. The laboratory of the scientific police of the SP confirmed that the seized substance was not a narcotic product, but was powdered sugar.
Despite this confirmation, the court of Torre de Moncorvo decided to keep Manuel in custody as a measure of coercion.
Now, after eight months of arrest, they decided to release the man. Defense lawyer Joao Pérez expressed regret that the dissemination of information about the cases in the media solved the problem.
