There are eight games in which Benfica are still being prosecuted by the sports court for alleged active corruption or improperly offering an advantage. This conclusion follows from the recent verdict handed down by the PPF Disciplinary Council (CD). Let’s do it step by step.
On 1 June 2018, CD launched an investigation following an SIC report in which Maritimo players claimed they were lured into losing to Benfica in the 2015/16 season and also claimed that Sporting offered them a prize for their points. from the eagles.
On March 2, 2023, the CD included a CNN news story that the Public Ministry (MP) was investigating Benfica for alleged irregularities in 12 games, as one of them was the match that led to the investigation. Six of these games involved Benfica directly, and in a further six the Eagles are suspected of promising compensation to rivals Sporting and Porto if they beat their rivals.
On March 31, 2023, the CR transferred the indictment to the deputy Cesar Boaventura (he was already sentenced to three years and four months suspended for corruption), since, in addition to playing with Maritimo, meeting with Rio Ave in 2015/16 as a suspect.
On the 16th of this month, CD agreed with the League Instructors Committee and lifted suspicions in four of Benfica’s games as there was no evidence that the club had given any illegal orders. However, the investigation remains open, with two games being investigated in which the eagles were directly involved, and six others in which they allegedly attempted to harm lions and dragons.
