The Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) and the National Association of Portuguese Coaches (ANTF) have decided to name Arthur Jorge, who died on Thursday, for the award for the best coach of the 2023/24 season.
In a statement released this Sunday, the league explains that both organizations wanted to pay tribute to “Arthur Jorge, the first Portuguese coach to win the European Cup and a name that will forever remain in the history of Portuguese football.”
“Arthur Jorge is an inevitable name, a man who will forever remain in the book of great heroes of Portuguese football, one of the coaches who opened the doors to Portuguese coaches in the world,” says Pedro Proença, President of the League. ,
José Pereira, leader of the ANTP, highlights the fact that Arthur Jorge, who has died aged 78, “will forever be linked to the history of the great Portuguese coaches.”
The Coach of the Year Award for the 2023/24 season, called the Arthur Jorge Award, is determined by a vote of coaches and captains of clubs participating in the I and II Portuguese football leagues.
Arthur Jorge, a former footballer, has died aged 78 after a coaching career of more than 20 years, winning Porto’s first European Cup and with whom he became national champions three times.
He also won the French title with Paris Saint-Germain and the Saudi title with Al Hilal as coach. He began his career as a striker, capped 16 times by the national team, playing for clubs such as Porto, Academica, in which he combined sports with the study of German philology, Benfica, which won four league titles and two Portuguese Cup, and Belenenses, before moving to the North American Rochester Lancers.
He also coached Portugal, Switzerland and Cameroon twice.
