About 600 students in Montalegre returned to classes this Monday after school activities and school transport were suspended on Friday due to snowfall, the fire chief said.
Miguel Monteiro, fire chief of Montalegre, told Lusa that school transport was operating normally this morning, although it was snowing again in this municipality in the northern Vila Real region.
After being suspended on Friday due to snow and ice on the roads, teaching activities resumed this Monday in the school group Dutor Bento da Cruz, which combines the secondary schools Dutor Bento da Cruz and Dr. Bento da Cruz. basic schools in Montalegre, Salto and Cabril, as well as the Montalegre Cooperative for Education, Rehabilitation, Training and Inclusion (CACI), with a total of 600 students.
“We will see how the situation develops because it is starting to turn white and especially in higher areas it could be problematic, for example in Pitoes das Junias or at the border,” said Miguel Monteiro.
The commander reported that two vehicles had been spreading salt on the roads since 6:30 a.m. due to ice formation.
With snow blanketing the landscape, many visitors headed to Montalegre over the weekend, with a council statement speaking of the “real pilgrimage” witnessed in the Laruco mountains.
