The Antiqvvum restaurant (Porto) today received its second Michelin star, while four establishments received one star, the publication announced at a ceremony exclusively dedicated to Portugal in Albufeira.
At the ceremony, chef Vitor Matos saw Antiqvvm receive two Michelin stars, joining the remaining seven restaurants previously recognized by the guide in this category, credited with “excellent cuisine worthy of a visit.”
“In Antiqvvm, a restaurant that stands out for its beautiful view of the Douro (from the balcony) and its unique location, in the same palace where the Romantic Museum is located, all his creativity, his technique of craftsmanship, and his culinary experience while working are revealed, as well his special obsession is to offer dishes that, although original, are natural and harmonious, combined with the best seasonal products. His proposal invites gastronomes to take a “journey around the world” with their tastes, going beyond the purely gastronomic, because, as he himself notes , through his dishes he strives to “promote the values of cultural, natural, evolutionary, social and artistic cuisine,” he explains in the guide.
2Monkeys (Vitor Matos and Francisco Quintas, Lisbon); Desarma (Octavio Freitas, Funchal); Ó Balcão (Rodrigo Castelo, Santarem) and Sála (João Sa, Lisbon) are restaurants that have received a Michelin star, which characterizes “high-level cuisine, worth a visit.”
There are a total of 31 one-star restaurants in this year’s guide. Three restaurants did not renew their star: Eneko Lisboa (due to closure), Casa da Calçada (Amarante, under construction) and Vistas (Vila Nova de Cancela, due to the departure of chef Rui Silvestre, who joined Fifty Seconds).
Portugal still does not have the maximum distinction of three stars (“unique cuisine that makes the trip worthwhile”).
Portuguese restaurants featured in the 2024 Michelin Guide for Spain and Portugal were announced tonight at the first exclusively national gala, which will become an annual event, reports the publication, which until the 2023 edition announced the winners in a joint ceremony between the two countries. .
Portugal also has two more restaurants with a green star (which characterizes sustainable gastronomy): Malhadinha Nova (João Sousa, Albernoa) and Ó Balcão (Rodrigo Castelo, Santarem) – now there are five in this category.
On the evening when the Minister of Economy and Maritime Transport, António Costa e Silva, asked for stars to be awarded to female chefs, the Young Chef award was presented to Rita Magro (Blind, Porto). The “sala” award (which distinguishes the service) was given to Pedro Marquez (Yitman, two stars, “Gaia”), and the “sommelier” award was received by Leonel Nunez (Il Gallo d’Oro, two stars, Funchal).
Eight new Bib Gourmand restaurants were announced at the ceremony (good value for money, around 45 euros): Flora (João Guedes Ferreira, Viseu); Inato Bistro (Thiago Costa and Miguel Rodriguez, Braga); Norma (Hugo Alves, Guimarães), O Pastus (Annakaren Fuentes, Paço de Arcos); Olayas (Monica Gomes, Figueira da Foz); Oma (Luis Moreira, Bayan); Patio 44 (Simão Soares and Afonso Ramos, Porto) and Poda (João Narigeta, Montemor o Novo). There are currently 32 restaurants in Portugal that have received this award.
The guide also recommends 21 more establishments, for a total of 96.
