European authorities are concerned about the trafficking of a new and dangerous drug: nitacenes. The substance has killed more than 200 people in Europe and America since it was first discovered on the streets in 2019, according to a report published Wednesday. La Voz de Galicia.
“The real number of deaths is unknown because [os nitacenos] are not detected during routine hospital tests. To detect this drug, you need to specifically look for it,” says Koldo Callado, doctor and professor of pharmacology, quoted in the same newspaper.
To date, no cases of the disease have been reported in Spain. The last two deaths were recorded in Boulder, a city in Colorado, USA.
Known as the “Frankenstein drug,” nitacenes are a class of synthetic opioids that include more than 20 different compounds. The effects are similar to those of morphine, oxycodone, heroin, and fentanyl, but they are much more potent. According to laboratory tests, nitacenes are hundreds of thousands of times more potent than morphine and 40 times more potent than fentanyl.
Frankenstein’s drug can be taken in tablet, powder, or liquid form, or mixed with other substances such as heroin, benzodiazepines, or fentanyl.
