Women who stole tens of thousands of euros worth of gold and money from homes during house cleaning have been charged, the Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) PSP said on Friday.
In a statement, PSP said it launched a police operation called “Golden Purge” through its Criminal Investigations Division on Thursday to execute search and arrest warrants.
“The investigation focused on a group of women who stole gold from homes while cleaning the house,” the note said, adding that after weeks of investigation and victim testimony, it was determined that “the theft was an assortment of gold coins.” pieces in the amount of 32 thousand euros, as well as 15 thousand euros in banknotes” from different places of residence.
As part of the operation, “dozens of gold and silver coins were seized in several areas of Lisbon County from residential buildings that were cleaned by a group of suspects.”
“The suspects acted in a precise and coordinated manner: they stole jewelry and subsequently sold it, earning thousands of euros,” PSP said.
As a result of the searches, 3,500 euros in ECB banknotes were also seized. [Banco Central Europeu] and computer equipment, possibly purchased from the receiver market,” the note said.
According to the capital command of the PSP, the criminal activities of the suspects have been “interrupted” and they are “accused”, and “the investigation continues with the aim of recovering the gold and returning it to its rightful owners.”
