Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Republic, is one of more than 200 thousand voters registered to vote early this Sunday, a week before the day of the legislative elections.
In total, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 208,007 voters expressed a desire to vote this Sunday.
This is down from the 2022 legislative elections (315,785 registered) but much higher than the 2019 legislative elections (56,291).
The so-called mobility vote allows voters to vote a week in advance in the municipality of their choice. If they don’t, they can do it on Election Day, which is March 10th.
More than 10.8 million Portuguese are called upon to vote in the selection of 230 deputies to the Assembly of the Republic.
18 political forces, 15 parties and three coalitions are participating in the elections.
Among those registered is the President of the Republic, who decided to vote in advance because he felt informed about the candidates’ proposals and considered this an incentive against abstention.
The form of early mobile voting, established after the entry into force of Organic Law No. 3/218 on the occasion of the elections of Portuguese Members of the European Parliament in 2019, was chosen by 285,848 in the 2022 legislative elections.
