This Sunday, Benfica defends its leadership of the I Football League when it meets Porto in the 24th round, while Sporting, hosting Farense, waits for the Reds to make a mistake in a classic game.
The Reds, the reigning national champions, enter the Dragana field nine points ahead of Porto (58 to 49) but have only two points over Sporting, second with one game less to play.
Benfica had won two in a row in the league and had not lost in the competition since the first round, but were beaten 2–1 by Sporting in midweek in the first leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-final.
Porto, who beat Santa Clara on Thursday to reach the semi-finals of the main tournament, are in third place and tied in League One with Gil Vicente, having won only one of their last four games in the tournament.
