A 40-year-old woman was arrested in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira island, Azores, on “strong indications” of arson and attempted murder, the Judicial Police (PJ) said this Sunday.
In its statement, the SP specified that the woman was identified and detained by the Department of Criminal Investigations of the Azores, with the cooperation of the Public Security Police (PSP).
According to the source, early Saturday morning, the woman, “allegedly driven by a sense of revenge, went to her family’s home, where, using a makeshift device containing a flammable liquid, she started a fire that quickly spread, endangering the lives of eight residents.”
Volunteer firefighters from Angra do Heroismo were called to the scene and “managed to prevent the fire from spreading to other compartments and other houses.”
Also, according to the joint venture, five residents of the house were taken to the hospital with second-degree burns and breathing problems, and one of the victims was placed in intensive care.
The detainee will be brought to the judicial authorities to apply any coercive measures.
