The representative of Livre warned this Sunday about the “usual pattern of the far right” regarding the reliability of the electoral process, after the leader of Chegi announced an attempt to “distort the result” of the legislative elections.
Conversation with journalists after visiting the “Museum of News” as part of the legislative campaign [Museu das Notícias]In the historic center of Sintra, Rui Tavares was asked on Saturday about Andre Ventura’s statements and replied that “this is a common game of the far right.”
“First they talked about the votes as if they already had the votes in their pocket, they announced results that they did not have, and this was the case in all elections, with blatant intellectual dishonesty, and then when they realized that they were I will not get these votes because there has been a mobilization and the Portuguese people do not want a divided country, with hate speeches, they want a country of progress and cordiality, in which we move into the future together, they question the reliability of the elections,” he said .
Rui Tavares warned that similar accusations had already been made in the United States against President Donald Trump and in Brazil against Jair Bolsonaro, saying “it ended badly.”
The leader of Livre, who also heads the Lisbon list, highlighted that Andre Ventura questioned the integrity of the elections on the same day that he received the support of Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian president, whom Tavares classified as “the most corrupt ruler in the European Union.”
“It is obvious that we have a party that is a farce in Portuguese politics (…) It is a farce for such a party to want to present itself as a party friendly to law and order and fighting corruption,” he said.
At a rally in Figueira da Foz on Saturday, President Chegi said there was an attempt to “distort the result” of the March 10 legislative elections, which would involve “cancelling the votes” of his party.
“There is an attempt to distort the results of these elections in Portugal, and we must be very careful about this,” he said in a speech.
Andre Ventura said he has reports from Portuguese communities around the world that there are ballots that “haven’t reached” or “seem to only reach some and not others.”
This Sunday, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) said it has no complaints about any attempts to “distort the results” of the legislative elections on the 10th.
Speaking to Lusa, CNE spokesman Fernando Anastasio declined to comment on the accusations made on Saturday by Chegi President Andre Ventura, but clarified that no investigation or investigation is being carried out on the matter.
“I have no knowledge of any complaints filed” and “the matter has not been addressed” by the CNE, the person in charge said.
“Nobody has asked about these complaints yet, except the media,” Fernando Anastasio limited himself to the words.
