CDU councilor in the Braga city council, Vitor Rodrigues, warned this Monday about the expected increase in the number of students in the municipality who will only be able to receive “decent” meals at school, taking into account the economic needs of their families.
Speaking at the two-week executive meeting, Vitor Rodriguez said these concerns were brought to his attention at a meeting with the Federation of Parent Associations of the municipality of Braga.
“Monday is the day when there is less food left in canteens, and this is a clear sign of a deteriorating social situation,” he said.
For a communist, the “only decent food” that many students can eat is at school.
“They can’t do that at home, so they’re hungrier on Mondays,” he said, also reporting a “very significant” increase in the number of students reported to the Children and Young People’s Commission. .
He acknowledged that this may be a reflection of the negative evolution of the economic situation of families, particularly as a result of rising house prices, and asked the chamber to address this reality in conjunction with school groups.
In response, Education Advisor Carla Sepulveda said she had no information about the phenomenon, stressing that she would try to understand what was happening.
He also said that “most days” there is enough food in the canteens.
“I don’t have any reports from the Parents’ Federation, they’ve never expressed this concern to us, let’s be careful and try to understand if it’s because they’re not eating.” [em casa que segunda-feira é o dia em que a comida menos sobra”, referiu.
