Growing up in a family with good economic conditions helps alleviate poverty in adulthood, but does not prevent one in 10 people (12% of the population) with such a background from currently living below the poverty line. However, this condition rises to 21.2% among those who were teenagers in a low-income family.
The data comes from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) survey on income and living conditions, which covered the Portuguese population aged 25 to 59 years, corresponding to 45.8% of the country’s total population at the beginning of 2023. 4.8 million people.
A representative sample of this age group was asked to describe, in response to a series of questions, whether the economic situation in which they lived at age 14 was very bad or moderately bad, or whether it was moderately good, good or very good.
The INE concludes that the risk of poverty for those who grew up in good economic conditions is 12%, which is therefore lower than that of the general population (17% in 2022). When compared to those who grew up in a poor economic situation, this probability increases to 21.2%.
In Portugal, anyone whose monthly income is below €591 is considered to be below the poverty line.
Rates are particularly high among those who lacked books and school equipment at home (32.1%) or had unmet basic food needs (32.8%), according to a survey conducted by INE.
