After the meeting, Viktor Orban explained his reasons for supporting Donald Trump. “We need leaders in the world who are respected and who can bring peace. He is one of them! Come back and bring us peace, Mr. President!” he wrote on the social network X.
The Hungarian prime minister and the former US president are long-time allies. Viktor Orban’s stance on national sovereignty and immigration policy is admired by many conservatives in the United States.
The head of the Hungarian government has never vetoed EU sanctions against Russia, but in December he delayed approval support package for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros. On February 1, he overturned his veto, allowing European heads of state and government to agree on a bailout plan for the next four years.
