The UN Palestine Refugee Agency (UNRWA), an organization accused of aiding Hamas, is at “risk of bankruptcy” due to the suspension of financial support from several countries.
Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, said donors’ response to Israel’s accusations could bankrupt the organization and jeopardize humanitarian assistance to more than two million people living in the Gaza Strip.
“What is at stake is the short-term fate of Palestinians in Gaza, who are facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis,” he said, as quoted by Reuters.
UNRWA was created in 1949 and is at the center of humanitarian assistance in the Palestinian enclave. The organization also provides healthcare and education.
Israel has accused some UNRWA staff of involvement in the Islamist group’s October 7 attack. Once the information was shared, several countries condemned the NGO and felt that withholding funding would be the right thing to do.
