British MNE proposes a solution to allow Germany to indirectly support the sending of missiles to Ukraine

Foreign Secretary and former British Prime Minister David Cameron has openly considered offering Germany an arms swap in the context of that country’s debate over the supply of Taurus missiles to Ukrainian forces.

In an interview with the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, David Cameron considered the possibility of an exchange in which Germany would supply Taurus cruise missiles to the United Kingdom, and London, in turn, would supply Kyiv with more Storm Shadow missiles.

Thus, Germany could indirectly support Ukraine by not providing long-range Taurus cruise missiles.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz refuses to supply the weapon, arguing that its 500-kilometer range could be used to attack targets in Russia and drag Germany into the war.

“We are ready to consider all options to maximize the effect for Ukraine,” said David Cameron, who, however, refused to provide details or tell opponents what was planned.

The minister also noted that Germany’s position could be interpreted as a sign that the chancellor does not trust the Ukrainians to use missiles responsibly.

David Cameron, however, rejected Olaf Scholz’s concerns that the delivery of cruise missiles could lead to an escalation of the war. “It is entirely possible to place restrictions on the use of these weapons to ensure that they do not in any way contribute to escalation. And they don’t,” he said.

According to the DPA news agency, the possibility of supplying Taurus missiles from the Bundeswehr (BF) to NATO partners such as the UK and France was discussed back in January.

The German coalition government is divided over the Taurus debate, with the conservative CDU/CSU opposition alliance expected to introduce a motion in parliament calling on the government to transfer long-range weapons systems to Ukraine “without delay.”

There are signs that the proposal could also be supported by the Liberal Party (FDP) and the Greens, partners in the government of Social Democrat Olaf Scholz. However, part of the opposition also supports the position of the Social Democratic Chancellor.
