Between last Monday and Friday, the Public Security Police (PSP), as part of an inspection of business entities, seized 114 tons of explosive precursors (chemicals) and opened 25 administrative offense reports.
In a statement on Monday, the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism, PSP said that under Operation Explosive Precursors, 179 inspection activities were carried out against economic operators supplying explosive precursors and professional users seeking prevent “illegals associated” with these activities.
A PSP source explained to Lusa that precursor products are substances, components that can be used in the illegal manufacture of explosives.
However, according to the source, they can also be used legally, for example, in agriculture, namely as fertilizers and herbicides.
The operation resulted in 25 violation notices, nine of which were for improper storage, eight for failure to record or improperly record transactions and acquisitions or production completed, and three for failure to comply with the technical standards specified for the event. activities.
Three administrative offenses were also filed for providing limited access to individuals to explosive precursors.
During the operation, 11 tons (10,875 kg) of potassium nitrate and three tons (2,950 kg) of potassium permanganate were seized for storing nitrates in quantities exceeding the permitted quantities, as well as for the lack of an appropriate license issued by the PSP.
The operation arises “under the exclusive and specific authority of the PSP with respect to the licensing, control and supervision of the manufacture, storage, marketing, use and transportation of arms, ammunition, explosives, hazardous materials and explosive precursors.”
“This PSP operation is once again linked to the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism (established by the European Union), observed annually on 11 March following the terrorist attacks carried out with explosives at the Atocha station in Madrid on 11 March 2004, which killed 193 people killed and about 2,000 injured,” the note said.
The operation aims to “contribute to reducing the threat that explosive precursors pose in the European Union by strengthening the control system over the commercialization and use of explosive precursors, substances or preparations of which could be misused for the illicit manufacture of explosives”, indicates PSP. .
