Three Student Climate Strike activists were arrested this Wednesday after they climbed onto the roof of the Bank of Portugal in Lisbon and unfurled a banner with protest phrases demanding an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2030.
A source in the capital command of the PSP Lisbon confirmed the arrests to Lusa.
Student climate strike activists took to the roof of Banco do Portugal early Wednesday morning, where they hung a banner reading “Government protects fossil fuel profits = student resistance. End Fossil 2030.”
“Students are demanding an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2030 and an end to the use of fossil gas for electricity generation by next year, using 100% renewable and free electricity through the government’s Renewable Energy Service,” the movement said.
The representative of the protest, Leonor Chico, stressed, quoted in the note, that “the government that will be formed in the coming days will not have a plan to destroy the fossil within scientific time frames.”
“The end of fossil fuel use by 2030 is non-negotiable, it is an existential necessity. And we know it’s possible. By next year we could have 100% renewable and free electricity. The obstacles are not technical or scientific. The only obstacle is a political decision to put the profits of mining companies above our lives,” he says.
In the note, students also say the Student Climate Strike is “calling for a wave of action” to end fossil fuel use in May called “Student Spring to End Fossils.”
