Porto catches up with Benfica in controversial title tally

Debuting on the League Cup honors list, Porto once again joined Benfica in the total tally of football titles. Both clubs now have 83 achievements. But the issue is controversial and far from reaching an arithmetic consensus.

This is because the first two editions of the Portuguese Super Cup are considered unofficial, according to the Portuguese Football Federation. The competition became official in 1981 and two titles were left behind, one won by Boavista and the other by Benfica. FC Porto does not recognize this title from its opponent and therefore claims another one (83 vs 82). Moreover, the Dragon Emblem Daily Newsletter was aware of this, meaning that FC Porto is now the club with the most titles.

On the Portuguese Football Federation website, the Boavista and Benfica titles appear in the overall list of winners, with the aforementioned exception that the competition was unofficial in the first two editions (1978/79 and 1979/80).
