Handball team forced to beat Tunisia to keep Paris 2024 dream alive

This Saturday, the Portuguese national handball team is forced to beat Tunisia in the second round of the Olympic qualifying tournament to keep their dream of qualifying for the 2024 Games in Paris alive.

After a false start and Thursday’s 32-29 loss to Norway, Portugal have two remaining games left to keep alive their chances of qualifying, reserved for the top two in each of the three groups.

Up next, Portugal will face Tunisia, who were also defeated in the first round and therefore also have victory as the only option, and other calculations can only begin to be made after the Norway-Hungary agreement, the winning teams in the first round and who will meet each other friend this Saturday at the end of the round.

Tunisia has only officially faced Portugal three times, most recently in the pre-Olympic tournament that dictated Portugal’s unprecedented qualification for Tokyo 2020, a game which Portugal won 34-27. The remaining two games took place in the group stages of the World Cup: in 1997 Tunisia won with a score of 19-18, and in 2003 in Portugal the Portuguese team won with a score of 27-26.

The game between Portugal and Tunisia is scheduled for 17:00 local time (16:00 Portuguese), followed by the Norway-Hungary game scheduled for 19:30 (18:30).
