Road traffic accidents and related deaths and serious injuries decreased in the first two months of the year compared to the same period in 2019 and 2023, the Public Security Police (PSP) reported this Sunday.
“Traffic accident data for January and February 2024 and their comparison with the same period in 2019 and 2023 show that there has been a significant reduction in the number of accidents, fatalities and serious injuries this year,” PSP said in B The statement noted that 2021 and 2022 are not considered for comparison because they correspond to the pandemic period when there was less traffic.
The number of minor injuries and the total number of injuries increased (91 more and 69 more, respectively) compared to last year, but the number of accidents decreased (520 fewer, from 8897 to 8377), as did their severity, now that the number of fatalities “clearly lower” than last year (from 17 to 10), as is the number of serious injuries (from 122 to 100).
Compared to the first two months of 2019, there is a decrease in the number of road traffic accidents (1,228 fewer), as well as the number of fatalities (1 less), minor injuries (345 fewer) and the total number of injured (340 fewer). ).
Only the number of serious injuries this year was higher (five more) compared to those recorded in 2019.
In terms of roadside checks, in January and February 2024, the PSP conducted 3,990 operations across the country, checked 106,614 drivers and monitored 481,871 vehicles using radar.
In total, the police recorded 27,777 violations, of which 5,894 were speeding, which corresponds to more than 21% of the total number of registered offenses.
As part of the same inspections, 34,558 alcohol tests were carried out, resulting in 477 administrative offenses for driving while intoxicated.
The PSP highlights that of these violations, 113 were for “reduced alcohol drivers” (drivers with less than 3 years of driving experience), which equates to approximately 24% of the total number of drink-driving violations. .
Other violations cited by security forces included lack of mandatory periodic inspection (2,344 cases), lack of liability insurance (773), use of a mobile phone while driving (601), failure to use a seat belt (305) and child seats (125).
During the same period, there were 1,040 arrests for traffic offenses, including 555 for drunk driving and 485 without a license.
The PSP called for safe driving and compliance with the law, recalling that human behavior is now “recognized as the most important factor in the occurrence of most road accidents.”
