German Jose humorously thanked on Tuesday the medal for cultural merit received from the “over-retired” government, given that “freedom is not offered” and that the situation in the country is only the result of “natural events of a functional democracy.”
On his 70th birthday, comedian Germán José received the Medal of Cultural Merit from the hands of outgoing Prime Minister António Costa in a private ceremony in the gardens of the official residence in Lisbon, which was marked by many moments of humor, laughter and even cake and congratulations from all those present .
“In the world in the state it is in, having heard the news coming from Russia, Ukraine, Israel, the Gaza Strip, I think that our problems are not problems, they are natural phenomena of a functional democracy,” he answered reporters. at the end and already with a medal on his chest, when asked about the national political situation.
German Jose dedramatized and considered that “the elections were a success, the country is boasting, the new generations are beautiful and strong,” considering himself a person who sees “the glass is always half full.”
Recalling moments of “great suffering” in his career, such as the suspension of the Humor de Perdisan program or the petitions against his columns, the actor also warned that “freedom is not offered for free and” it always requires work and always needs to be watered, like a bonsai and conquered by the intellect.”
“The worse the situation, the more important humor is,” he admitted, believing that “humor is also a barometer of democratic health.”
While lamenting the bad symptom of cultural withdrawal from the last election campaign, Germán José was optimistic about the cultural production that has been “so alive” in Portugal lately.
“Sooner or sooner everything will become more civilized in the sense that I think the state was obliged to invest more money and more interest in maintaining certain types of art that cannot survive without subsidies,” he urged.
During his performance, the comedian told António Costa that he was afraid that the medal ribbon would not go in because he was “very self-confident.”
“I am currently the biggest head in the Portuguese theater after the death of the actor Costa Ferreira, who was the only one who had a head of the same diameter: 63 in diameter,” he joked, hearing the unmistakable laugh of actress Maria Rueff.
Jokingly saying that he was born with a “sharp humorist, which is a natural inclination to talk nonsense, always, on any occasion,” Herman recalled the time when the Humor de Perdisan program was canceled and, when “he was devastated,” he received “ a telephone call from the man who was then President of the Republic,” referring to Mário Soares.
Herman recreated this conversation and imitated the voice of Mario Soares, doing the same for another conversation in which the same Mario Soares told him that he was going to be awarded in 1992.
According to the comedian, the happiness he felt from this medal, which he received from Costa on Tuesday, was as strong as in 1992.
“What is particularly encouraging is the fact that this government is hyper-resigning. These are people who in a few days will no longer send anything, nothing. They must return everything, furniture, things. They’re going home,” he joked.
This line of humor continued with Herman imagining that António Costa might call him in a few months and ask him to help “open a new location for the airport,” which drew laughter from the still prime minister.
“Or, worse, Finance Minister Fernando Medina calls me and says, ‘German Jose, is this okay? I have a problem, I still have four billion and I don’t know how I’m going to spend it. and then we had to fly to Saudi Arabia to meet Cristiano Ronaldo to borrow Georgina for 15 days,” he joked.
