The National Federations of Education (FNE) and Teachers (Fenprof) said this Wednesday that the 20 thousand vacancies announced to secure teachers in schools are not enough to meet the needs.
On Tuesday, the Diário da República published a decree defining the opening of 20,853 vacancies among school staff, so that teachers associated with the staff of the Pedagogical Zone (QZP) can move closer to home and settle in a specific school.
The diploma also provides for the opening of 7,077 vacancies for contract teachers who will join the staff of the Ministry of Education.
The two main bodies representing teachers judged on Wednesday that the places available in this year’s internal and external competitions were insufficient and did not meet the needs of schools.
“These figures represent progress compared to previous years. FNE considers them to be insufficient to meet the real needs of schools,” the federation said in a statement.
Concerned about the persistent shortage of teachers, FNE stresses that students are still recovering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on learning, so they need more specialists.
On the other hand, they also mention increasing the number of international students, reducing the maximum number of students per class, and dividing classes into practical and experimental ones.
Fenprof also emphasized the insufficiency of available vacancies and added that “the opening of vacancies alone will not solve the serious problem of teacher shortages.”
“Everything indicates that the advertised vacancies still do not correspond to the real needs of schools and groups,” the trade union organization says.
