The government will grant leave to workers performing public functions next Thursday afternoon, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Friday.
In an official statement, António Costa’s office justifies the tolerance of “workers performing public functions in the state” by the Easter period, which forces many people to travel outside their place of residence.
“Given that during the Easter period it is common practice for many people to travel outside their place of residence for the purpose of family celebrations, the government has decided to provide a day off on the afternoon of Maundy Thursday, March 28, for employees performing public functions in direct public administration services , both central and deconcentrated, as well as in state institutions,” the note says.
However, the executive branch makes an exception for “services and bodies that, for reasons of public interest, must continue to operate.”
Easter, one of the main religious holidays along with Christmas, is celebrated on Sunday, March 31.
