The Russian security services (FSB) announced this Friday the arrest of seven people in Moscow accused of links to a group of pro-Ukrainian militants who allegedly carried out an armed invasion of Russia.
The suspects were allegedly in contact with the Russian Volunteer Corps, designated by Moscow as a “terrorist organization,” with the aim of “carrying out violent actions against representatives of law enforcement agencies, the military and foreigners,” the FSB said, as cited by Rossiyskiye Novosti.
According to the FSB, Russian authorities prevented the creation of a “criminal group” in the Russian capital.
Security services say that during the operation, “machetes, knives and ‘communication equipment'” were seized, which allowed the suspects to contact the leaders of the Russian militia.
Since last week, these groups have claimed responsibility for armed incursions into the Russian border areas of Belgorod and Kursk, with the Moscow army claiming to have repelled “several attacks.”
Last Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the FSB to punish these pro-Kiev Russian militants, calling them “scum” and “traitors.”
At a press conference held in Kyiv on Thursday, the Russian Volunteer Corps and two other groups involved in the protests said that “the fight will continue and will soon spread to other cities.”
Moscow authorities regularly report detentions of Russian citizens and foreigners acting on behalf of Ukraine.
This Friday, Russian security services also said they had thwarted an attack planned by Ukrainian intelligence services in the Zaporozhye region in southern Ukraine, a region partially controlled by Russia.
“The attack planned in Berdyansk, Zaporozhye region, by Ukrainian special services with the help of a Russian citizen recruited by Kiev (…) was thwarted,” the FSB said in a statement.
The largest nuclear power plant in Europe is located in Zaporozhye, the complex is under the control of Moscow forces.
According to the same document, a Russian citizen born in 1974 is allegedly involved in the murder of a Russian army officer in an explosion in October 2023.
