According to the lists published this Friday, about 85% of teachers were selected first in a transitional competition for 63 new staff teaching zones, in which almost three thousand vacancies remained unfilled.
The competition is the result of one of many changes made to the teacher recruitment and management model last year, which reorganized the teaching zone tables (QZPs), reducing the geographical size of regions so that teachers were not stationed so far from home.
Thus, from the 10 QZPs there now became 63, through which teachers were now allocated through a transitional competition in which they were required to apply for all new areas created within the geographical boundaries of the one with which they were associated.
“Based on their preference, candidates were placed in one of the new QZPs, which resulted from the split of the defunct QZP they were associated with, with 85.4% of teachers receiving a place in the new QZP they indicated in their first preference.” , refers to an information note published this Friday by the Directorate General of School Administration (DGAE).
Of the 24,191 initially open vacancies, 2,939 positions remained unfilled due to retirements as well as “simple individual oversights” or teachers in other roles not applying, according to the DGAE.
The general guidance also reminds that teachers who participated in the competition are now required to accept the placement by 11:59 pm on Tuesday.
By joining the Ministry of Education, teachers initially join the so-called pedagogical zone structures and can be placed in any school in that zone.
In the previous configuration they could make long daily trips – for example, the Algarve region corresponded to only one QZP and could be accommodated in both Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António – but now these distances are reduced with the creation of new zones.
The only people excluded from the transition competition were those who were linked through the External Dynamic Links competition held last year and who will have to apply nationwide this year.
