20 years in prison for man who shot dead woman in Ponte de Lima

The Supreme Court upheld the 20-year prison sentence to which Fernando Correia was sentenced for the murder of his 35-year-old wife Sonia Barros in May 2022 in Correlana, Ponte de Lima.

The victim, a mother of two children ages 3 and 12, was shot at least 11 times (an autopsy revealed at least eight bullet holes) at close range in the backyard of the family home. All because he had an “idea” that the woman was unfaithful to him, which was never proven.

Sonya was killed after she took her two children to school. As soon as she returned home, Fernando started an argument with her, and Sonia ran away. She was pursued by her husband, who, armed with a 6.35 mm pistol, shot and killed her. The victim was still alive for several minutes and the killer did not call for help. Supreme Court judges found the killer’s arguments “inappropriate”.
