The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecast worsening weather in the Azores on Wednesday and Thursday, issuing orange and red warnings due to strong winds and rough seas.
“The formation of a secondary core associated with the so-called Nelson Depression and moving south towards the Azores region should cause worsening weather conditions throughout the archipelago,” IPMA said in a press release.
On Wednesday and Thursday, “winds are expected to increase significantly with gusts of about 110 km/h in the western group.” [Flores e Corvo]about 100 km/h in the central group [Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico e Faial] and 90 km/h in the eastern group [São Miguel e Santa Maria]”.
As for sea waves, “waves from the northwest should reach 10 meters of significant height in the western group with a maximum height of 20 meters, in the central group waves should reach eight meters and in the eastern group seven meters of significant height.”
According to IPMA, the northwesterly current, caused by the combined action of an anticyclone centered northwest of the Azores and the Nelson Trench centered south of the British Isles, “should transport a mass of cold and unstable air into the Azores region, causing the occurrence of showers, which may be hail.”
Flores and Corvo are under a red warning (the highest on the scale) from 02:00 (03:00 in Lisbon) until 08:00 Thursday due to forecast rough seas that could reach a maximum height of 20 metres. .
Due to rough seas they remain under an orange warning from 2pm Wednesday to 2am Thursday and 8am to 2pm Thursday, and a yellow warning from 11am to 2pm on Wednesday and from 14:00 on Thursday to 8:00 on Friday.
Warnings have also been issued for the western group due to the strong wind forecast: orange from 23:00 Wednesday to 08:00 Thursday and yellow from 14:00 to 23:00 Wednesday and 08:00 to 11:00 Thursday. .
The islands of the central group are under an orange warning for disturbances at sea from 5:00 am to 2:00 pm on Thursday and under a yellow alert from 11:00 am on Wednesday to 5:00 am on Thursday and from 2 00:00 am on Thursday to 11:00 am: 00 Friday.
A yellow warning has also been issued for strong winds from 5pm on Wednesday until 2pm on Thursday.
San Miguel and Santa Maria are also under a yellow warning from 17:00 Wednesday to 11:00 Friday (sea waves) and from 11:00 to 23:00 Thursday (wind).
