The union of the parishes of Vilar de Perdizes and Maixid in Montalegre filed a complaint with the PNP about a fake letter distributed among houses calling on former soldiers to go to war in Ukraine, which it classified as a “bad joke.”
The president of the parish union, João da Silva Araujo, said that about 40 letters were placed in mailboxes in the name of this municipality and falsely signed by the Portuguese army.
“There were phone calls after phone calls from people asking if I had written them a letter,” he said, noting that he went to file a complaint with the Republican National Guard to determine who was responsible.
The false draft is left in homes for the elderly and disabled and encourages former military personnel to sign up as volunteers for the war in Ukraine, planning to perform such functions as, for example, language translator.
The letter also states that former soldiers are required to report to the parish council headquarters in the Vila Real area on Sunday and that if they fail to comply, they could be fined 500 euros. .
The false mobilization of the reserve corps ends with the expressions “we are counting on you” and “Portuguese army”.
João da Silva Araújo called the letter “a joke in very bad taste” but said that some people were concerned and therefore asked for respect for those targeted, as well as for the institution of the União de Freguesias.
The mayor hopes this is an isolated act, but urged people to report if other similar situations arise.
