Palestinian Authority delays presentation of 2024 budget

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas signed a decree this Saturday delaying until June 30 the presentation of the budget for the 2024 fiscal year.

“Given the impossibility of presenting the draft general budget for the 2024 fiscal year, the decree-law will allow the Government to do this no later than June 30 of this year,” the official news agency said in a statement. Palestinian Wafa.

The same decree gives the Treasury the authority to collect taxes and continue to pay monthly assessments, even though Israel has collected a significant share of Palestinian Authority tax revenues since the 1994 Paris Protocol.

In recent months, the Palestinian government has focused its efforts on Israel’s war against Hamas and the appointment of a new Council of Ministers amid international pressure to reform the executive branch, which is currently led by Mohammad Mustafa as prime minister.

Economist Mustafa, appointed in early March, presented Abbas on Thursday with an executive branch that includes 24 ministers, including four women, and in which he will also hold the foreign affairs portfolio.

The new government will be sworn in on Sunday, the official news agency said.

The priority of the new Palestinian government will be the situation in the Gaza Strip, a plan to expand humanitarian access and reconstruction of the enclave, and the creation of a more stable Palestinian Authority, Wafa added.

The Palestinian Authority, created in 1994 under the Oslo Accords between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Israel, governs the West Bank, while the Islamic resistance movement Hamas has held power in the Gaza Strip since 2007.
