Three ships are approaching the territory with tons of humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip, which is experiencing a serious humanitarian and food crisis due to the Israeli offensive, the head of Cypriot diplomacy said this Monday.
Konstantinos Kombos told The Associated Press (AP) that three ships had been given permission to begin unloading their cargo.
The nearly six-month war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas movement has displaced much of Gaza’s population and pushed a third of its residents to the brink of famine.
According to the US charity World Central Kitchen (WCK), the ships Jennifer, Open Arms, Ledra Dynamic and barge carry enough prepared meals to prepare more than a million meals.
Products include rice, pasta, flour and canned vegetables.
European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Sunday hailed the “determinism to save lives” of non-governmental organizations Open Arms and World Central Kitchen (WCK) during their second maritime mission to deliver food to the population of the Gaza Strip.
“The second ship of WCK and Open Arms departed from Cyprus towards Gaza with assistance. Their determination to save lives is admirable: people in Gaza are dying of hunger. It is increasingly urgent that all land routes be opened for full and safe humanitarian access to prevent the spread of famine,” Borrell wrote on his social media account X.
This second mission departed last Saturday with “hundreds of tons of food” following a successful first delivery that delivered nearly 200 tons of food and water to the Palestinians.
The Open Arms trip is the second of the so-called Operation Amalthea, which aims to create a humanitarian maritime corridor between Cyprus and the Palestinian enclave, given the enormous difficulties facing relief operations on the ground in the Gaza Strip. .
