A homing pigeon with Portuguese markings is becoming a celebrity in Mexico. The animal was found with a damaged wing on a farm on the Yucatan Peninsula, near Cancun. Popular people and authorities believe that he crossed the Atlantic, covering almost eight thousand kilometers. The mystery began on March 28, when a farmer’s children saw an injured pigeon and took it home. On one paw there was a blue ring with the code 1568590 and the inscription “Portugal 2021”. The other paw had a black ring with the word “Pampa” written on it and a built-in GPS locator. There will also be a message on one of the rings, but the farmer refuses to open it. He says he just wants to help him get better and give him the opportunity to follow his own path. The Portuguese Pigeon Racing Federation guarantees that the above code is not registered in the national system, provided that the ring was transported from Portugal to Mexico or Brazil. However, the Atlantic crossing will not be unprecedented.
